From the Author, Rees Cowden

I've been planting and caring for acres and acres of grass for over forty years. I have a Masters degree and a degree in HORTICULTURE. My entire career has revolved around growing plants and growing great lawns. I'm a prolific gardening writer, past president of multimillion-dollar landscape businesses, I've been an adviser to University Horticulture departments and I'm the father of five great kids. I know how to grow a great lawn and how to do it with the least time and effort. I have tried to pack all my secrets and solutions to common problems into this book so you too can Grow Great Lawns

What will you learn by reading this book?

Well here is just a sample of the answers you will find in Growing Great Lawns:

What is the advantages of seed vs sod?

ANSWER: The advantage to starting with a seeded lawn rather than sod is really only one of cost saving. Seed will save money but you will need to spend time and energy that you will not with a sod lawn. When you buy sod for your lawn in essence you are paying the sod grower to deal with the extra work of a seed lawn.....plus.

How high should I cut my lawn?

ANSWER: Well this is a little tricky. I guess the best answer is that “it depends”. For most Bluegrass, ryegrass and fescue lawns they want to be about 2 1/2” in the growing season and 2” in the cooler times of the year. Never let them get so long that you are removing more than 1/3 of the blade length when you cut. The southern lawns, St. Augustine, Bermuda, centipede and Zoysia all prefer to be cut a bit lower at 1 ½ inch. Be sure to check the TURF CARE CHART in the APPENDIX

And get the answer to these F.A.Q’s:

  • My dogs urine is killing my lawn. What can I do?
  • How do I remove old grass for renovation?
  • How do I fix a bumpy lawn?
  • How much should I water my new sod?
  • When can I mow my new sod?
  • When can I mow my new seed lawn?
  • Why do some lawns turn brown in the winter?
  • What is the best grass for shady areas?
  • What is the best grass for high traffic areas?
  • When should I de-thatch my lawn?
  • What should I do with my clippings?
  • How can I keep my grass green in the winter?
  • How much sod can I haul in a regular size pick-up?
  • How long should I stay off my lawn after I fertilize?
